Portugal is a small country but rich in spectacular roads. After more than a decade riding from north to south, we picked the ten roads that still make us smile inside the helmet.

1. N222 — Peso da Régua to Pinhão. Voted several times one of the most beautiful roads in the world. 27 km of smooth curves with the Douro river always alongside.

2. N339 — Covilhã to Torre. Technical climb to mainland Portugal’s highest point. Thin air, tight curves and a lunar landscape at the top.

3. N266 — Odemira to Monchique. Inland Alentejo with wide curves between eucalyptus and cork oaks. Absolute silence and fresh asphalt.

4. N304 — Amarante to Marão. Headline act of the North. A mythical road for its sequence of high-altitude curves.

5. N221 — Trás-os-Montes. From the Fialho viewpoint to Douro Internacional. One of the country’s best-kept secrets.

6. N268 — Aljezur to Sagres. Costa Vicentina at its purest. A narrow road between cliffs and sea.

7. Serra da Arrábida road — A breathtaking view over the Sado estuary.

8. N339-1 — Manteigas to the Glacial Valley. One curve after another in a valley carved by ice.

9. N222-3 — Foz Côa to Barca de Alva. Solitary, with panoramas over hidden terraces.

10. N247 — Cascais to Cabo da Roca. Short but a must: the end of Europe, 30 minutes from Lisbon.
